R ajyavardhan Singh Rathore was shooting his way to a silver far away in the 2004 Athens Olympics. But it was an effort which proved to be a huge inspiration for a young Hyderabadi to develop keen interest in the sport. Backed by a strong determination and lots of hard work, Anam Mirza, younger sister of tennis star Sania Mirza, is now into big-time shooting competitions.

The sixteen-year-old surprised many by getting the wild card for the forthcoming Delhi National championship in the women's 10 m air pistol event with her impressive score of 337 in the recent State championship. “I am really enjoying the sport. I am determined to make a mark,” .

Significantly for Anam, the going might not be as tough as it was for her sister Sania, who was driven around the country by her father to participate in various AITA ranking tournaments to keep moving up the ladder.

“Performance is the key for anyone to be successful in sport. If Anam keeps improving, we are definitely going to support her in a big way,” says father Imran Mirza.

For her part, Anam is keen to strive for excellence in both academics and sports. “I take immense pride in the achievements of my sister. She is a great source of inspiration and ultimately a lot depends on how consistent I am in my sport and I want to be recognised for what I achieve,” says a confident Anam. One of her prized possessions is a rifle Sania gave her. “I cherish that,”she says with a big smile.

“Well, my first National should give a fair hint of things to come,” signs off Anam before packing her kit for another training session at the range.
