Richard LaGravenese’s 2007 film Freedom Writers is an all-time favourite.

It narrates the lives of a group of children from economically dis-advantaged backgrounds. They come from broken homes as well as face gang-wars within their community but one teacher is determined to help them overcome their difficulties.

By teaching the children the power of words and by drawing parallels between their stories and the Holocaust times, she succeeds in helping them rise above their problems and unite.
