Event The 5th annual Kela Awards recognised and felicitated the worst that Bollywood churned out in 2012
2012 wasn’t just about the doomsday speculation but was also a money minting year for Bollywood considering the large number of movies that made their way to the hundred crore club. But were all of them really worthy of being called a super hit or a blockbuster?
The 5th Annual Golden Kela Awards, the Indian version of Hollywood’s Golden Raspberry or Razzie Awards, saluted those nonsensical Bollywood movies, actors and directors, who managed to be the worst last year. Interestingly, most of the ‘Kela Award’ winners were the top grossers of the Hindi film industry in 2012.
“Through the last five years we have lost our minds and lots of money in an attempt to bring to light the worst that Hindi Cinema has to offer. We still strive to bring the ‘worst’ in the forefront and remind the filmmakers to make good cinema,” said Jatin Varma, founder of Golden Kela Awards.
Hosted by Anant Singh and RJ Zakir Khan, the award show kicked off with a tribute to Jaspal Bhatti.
Joker earned the ‘Worst Film Award’ for being one of the most horrible films ever made... anywhere. Its director Shirish Kunder received Golden Kela for Worst Director. Ajay Devgn got the Worst Actor Award for his roles in Son of Sardar and Bol Bachchan . His co-actor Sonakshi Sinha wasn’t too far behind for she won the award of the Worst Actor Female for ‘everything she did in 2012’.
While the audience rolled with laughter during the award ceremony, a question that played on people’s minds was why do Indian moviegoers actually go out and watch such bad films? They received The Golden ‘Baawra Ho Gaya Ke’ (Have you lost it) Kela Award for spending more than 600 crore rupees on films like Bol Bacchan , Housefull 2 , Agneepath , Rowdy Rathore and Ek Tha Tiger . Certificates were distributed among the audience.
The Kela trophy for the Most Atrocious Lyrics went to Anvita Dutt for “Ishq Wala Love” ( Student of the Year ). She was the first personality in the Kela Award’s five year history to receive the award in person. Anvita sportingly accepted the ‘Golden Kela’ and said, “Shekhar (Vishal-Shekhar Duo) had told me that I’ll definitely win an award for this song. But never knew it would be a Kela award!”
Amidst the lows, Gangs of Wasseypur , Vicky Donor , Paan Singh Tomar and Kahaani won the Anti-Kela Awards for their outstanding contribution to cinema last year. They reminded us that whilst the many pathetic movies hit the screens, others were there to keep the flame burning.
The hosts summed up the ceremony with a mock standing ovation to Shirish Kunder!
