"Anandam" has caught the viewer's attention

Another Tamil mega serial that has caught the attention of viewers is "Anandam" (Sun TV, 7 p.m., Monday to Friday), slotted at number two with an average TRP of 21.36. Directed by R. Selvaraj, "Anandam," does not boast of many big names (except Sukanya and Delhi Kumar) in its star cast. According to T. G. Thyagarajan the producer, "Though the serial is not telecast on prime time, it is still a hit, largely thanks to team work. The production team is constantly working on audience feedbackand bring in changes accordingly." Thyagarajan and his team have ensured that there is not too much melodrama in the serial that portrays women as smart, suave, ambitious and independent. When the serial began, popular TV writer, Devibala, rated high the character Shanti (played by Sukanya), a war widow who re-marries Karthik, an Army man. Karthik brings her home to his family, comprising his industrialist-father (Delhi Kumar), mother, an elder brother, who is married, and two sisters. They are shocked and are not willing to accept Shanti, especially Karthik's sister-in law, Abhirami (played brilliantly by Brinda Das), who wants him to marry her sister. In the early days of the serial, the focus was on Shanti and how she slowly brings about a change in the attitude of the family members, except Abhirami, who is constantly plotting against her. But of late the spotlight has been turned on the wily Abhirami and her machinations. Recently, actor Sripriya was introduced in the serial as an NRI businesswoman, Charulatha, with enough hints thrown in the script that she may be the long lost mother of Abhirami. SREEDHAR PILLAI
