FLAVOUR OF 2006 Besides sequels and remakes, Kajol returns to films

Bollywood will play it safe in 2006 by remaking old hits

Barely has the year 2005 breathed its last that the audiences are ready queue in for new films. If not anything, many, despite not liking the idea of the remakes, are waiting for Don that Farhan Akhtar is making. Sholey, that Ram Gopal Verma has decided to come up with and J.P Dutta's attempt to capture the poetess-courtesan of Lucknow in Umrao Jaan. Not only remakes, 2006 seems to be year of sequels too. Munna Bhai part II, Dhoom - 2 and Koi... Mil Gaya part II are waiting to be released. While Munna Bhai part II that is tentatively titled Munna Meets Mahatma will see some new faces, Dhoom - 2 has Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in grey shades and Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu in the lead. The new Don is Shah Rukh Khan who plays Amitabh Bachchan's role while Priyanka Chopra would be the new Zeenat Aman. You would never find the Big B taking rest. This week Raj Kumar Santoshi's Family - The Blood Ties has him in the lead. Then there is Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti. Sanjay Gupta's Zinda starring Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham and Celina Jaitely is the next big film. While Raj Kumar Hirani is busy giving finishing touches to Munna Bhai Part II, that he intends to release "in mid-summer, May or June", Vidhu Vinod Chopra is busy making Eklavya. For the first time audiences will see Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan together in the film. Karan Johar is already in the news for his multi-starrer Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna. This time he ropes in Abhishek Bachchan too besides the usual line up of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerjee. All biggies at one place? What about the length of their roles? Needless to say, a big portion of the film is shot in the U.S. Remember; Karan Johar has to sell it abroad too!You saw Kajol endorsing many products from a cell phone to a washing machine. Now see her in a film. Kunal Kohli has signed her for Fanaah opposite Aamir Khan. He plans to release it in May or June. After almost three years, a cautious Sooraj Barjatya returns with Vivah. Remember, despite all that gloss and glamour his last film Main Prem Ki Diwani hoon starring Hrithik, Abshishek and Kareena, failed at the box office. Those waiting for another Baghbaan to happen, can enjoy Ravi Chopra's Babul with the hit old pair of Amitabh and Hema Malini. The choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan is busy with her Happy New Year.RANA SIDDIQU
