Basketball A new facility at Gunrock Enclave opens up sporting options

Nestled in the serene surroundings of Secunderabad’s Gunrock Enclave is a basketball court that should be safe for every kind of hoopster. Its playing surface, without concrete, drastically reduces risk of serious injury. High fencing all around ensures that the ball doesn’t stray out of bounds either.

Recently a scheme by FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Commissioner Norman Isaac that aims to introduce enthusiasts to the joys of the game of hoops and wits. “We are reviving the action after about seven years,” said the National Institute of Sports (NIS) certified coach.

Assisting him will be Ignatius Michael, a Basketball Federation of India (BFI) 'A' class referee and junior National player Abhishek Ronald. Norman had in fact mentored the state senior squad to victory in the south zone and inter-zonal championships. His exposure to international competition includes officiating in international and Asian championships.

“We plan to have floodlights in future,” says Norman, who as Secretary of Trinity Basketball Promotions has conducted corporate tournaments and provided technical expertise in setting up the infrastructure for the sport .

As an introductory offer, he will charge an entry fee of Rs. 500 and Rs. 300 monthly. The scheme will function daily between 6 and 7.30 a.m.. and from 4 to 6.30 p.m. except on Mondays, when maintenance works are undertaken. “I hope to extend playing hours on weekends,” says Norman.
