Meet T wenty seven-year-old Suthahar, a software professional, who helps students from rural areas to develop the required skill sets to find jobs
It is comparatively easier for bright youngsters from big cities to get admission into good colleges, find well-paying jobs and settle down in a few years, but it is much harder for those coming from remote rural areas and modest financial backgrounds. Many of those from rural areas who appear for job interviews are rejected due to their inability to communicate well even if their subject skills are as strong as their urban counterparts. So they end up settling for modest paying jobs or go back to their villages.
Having experienced a few job rejections himself after graduation, 27-year-old J. Suthahar who hails from Pudukkottai, now works as a senior software engineer in a top multinational firm in Bangalore. Suthahar’s concern for the future of others from remote areas led him to start a software training centre in Coimbatore four years ago. This centre has helped 1,500 students get jobs in top firms across the country.
“Though I have been in the field of Information Technology (IT) for the last five years, it was quite a struggle in the beginning to find a job. After completing my graduation from Bishop Heber College in Trichy, I attended a few job interviews in Chennai. I was rejected as I was unable to present myself well enough,” recalls Suthahar. He then went to Coimbatore and managed to land a job as a telemarketing executive. It was at this time that he thought about improving the situation for others from similar background. And he set up the J Square Training in 2009 with a single computer. His training centre now has 10 computers and a training lab equipped with the latest technology. “The main objective is to bridge the gap between knowledge and skill,” he says. He charges a minimal fee from those who can afford to pay and trains others for free.
His core five-member team, some of them his students, provides training during the weekdays. Suthahar trains the students online during the week and visits the institute on weekends.
To encourage competitive spirit among students, the institute gives gold coins to best programmers and developers while winners of the weekly question and answer session and discussion get gadgets such as headsets, USB drives or Bluetooth devices.
J Square Training now attracts people of various age groups. “I recently trained a 60 year-old man who now has his own software start-up in Dindigul,” says Suthahar, who has published two e-books on software.
