USP: Eco-friendly retreatTucked away off the busy East Coast Road at Pudhukuppam is the eco-friendly beach hotel Dune. Built on 30 acres, the hotel is unique for its eco-friendly amenities. Drawing inspiration from Nature, the hotel has fused modern and traditional styles in all its 50 rooms. Dune has a combination of houses, cottages and rooms. Fifteen of the rooms are naturally cooled, while the rest are air-conditioned.

“Each bungalow is unique in architecture and design. The Nature-cooled rooms have been constructed using natural materials such as bamboo, giving them adequate ventilation. Every room has a sit-out,” says Sunil Varghese, director of the hotel.

From the Karaikudi-styled suite to the Kerala House, the hotel offers accommodation in varied architectural modes: Bamboo House, Mud House, Gramam House, Doll House and Flower House. There are two private pool villas with one more to come. The 60-foot Tower House, built over a water tank, offers a breathtaking view of the entire beach hotel.

In line with its Nature-friendly concept, Dune has a range of eco-friendly amenities such as solar water heater, low energy bulbs, and natural soaps and shampoos. Even the floor mat in each room has been done with natural colours and organic cotton from Auroville. Taste mouth-watering recipes from Continental, French and Indian cuisines at the Fun Restaurant. Step into the lounge and savour a cup of coffee prepared from freshly roasted organic beans from Elephant Valley, an eco-farm hotel in the Western Ghats. The seafood restaurant has its own list of delicacies. You can take a walk on the one-kilometre stretch of sandy beach.

“Every room has a television but no connection to channels. Instead, we have a DVD library which offers a wide choice of Indian and international movies,” says Dimitri Klein, managing director of the hotel.
