Elvis Presley Pocketful of Rainbows

Because, Jailhouse Rock and Hound Dog are no longer even remotely fresh to listen to. If you want to celebrate the genius of Elvis, you need to listen to the uncut studio recordings or the live versions. Oh, the ease with which he sings. He doesn’t really need the instruments, does he? The Jerry Maguire OST has a fun recording of this super romantic number so casually tossed up by the king of Rock ‘n’ Roll. One of the best movie albums ever, it also has a live version of The Who’s Magic Bus. That guitaring and the blast of drums blending with harmonica building to a climax is a trip by itself. Get head banging! You can blindly take any Cameron Crowe soundtrack and be assured of the best of Rock ‘n’ Roll, be it Elton John’s Tiny Dancer (in Almost Famous) or Paul McCartney’s Oscar winning Vanilla Sky.

Dropkick Murphys

I’m Shipping Up to Boston

What a song to wake up to. In fact, it could wake up your entire neighbourhood. The burst of energy from the Boston-based Celtic punk rock band is just the dose of adrenaline you need to get your day started. Yes, we know it better from Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Yes, the album also has Floyd going Comfortably Numb and Rolling Stones with Gimme Shelter… But come on, with all due respect to senior citizens who’ve got high on Floyd and stoned with Stones, isn’t it high time we retired these old men and celebrate some young fresh talent?

Brad Paisley Little Moments Like That

Sorry, Mr. Billy Joel. The next time I hear She’s Always A Woman, I want to pluck my ears out. And Mr. John Denver, take a hike down those country roads. This generation has Brad Paisley. Mud On The Tires probably is a more popular song than Little Moments Like That but hey, what could be romantic than “I know she’s not perfect but she tries so hard for me/ And I thank God that she isn’t ‘cause how boring would that be/ It’s the little imperfections it’s the sudden change in plans/When she misreads the directions and we’re lost but holdin’ hands/Yeah I live for little moments like that.”

Dave GrusinAscension to Virginity

This many time Oscar nominated composer and jazz artist really spices up the Oceans Twelve soundtrack, setting the perfect mood for a party with your closest friends with Ascension to Virginity, not needing anything more than a few la la las to get your feet tapping and humming. Soderberg’s Oceans franchise owes it to Dave Grusin and of course, the composer David Holmes who put it together. Very few soundtracks have managed to create magic without needing lines at all.. Kill Bill being another kickass compilation – Twisted Nerve, WuTang Clan, Woo Hoo…

Sacha Baren Cohen I Like To Move It

Yes, the original rap by The Mad Stuntman was extremely cheesy but when the man who played Borat gives it his mad touch, it’s a blast. It’s one of the ultimate party songs, guaranteed to make you laugh every single time you listen to it. More so, when you watch it. In the fun songs category, this just about edges out Smash Mouth’s I’m A Believer and All Star. Both those are hilariously funny, laugh-out-loud tracks because you see Shrek and Donkey dance to it but with I Like To Move It, you don’t have to picture King Julien in Madagascar, the song is funny by itself.

Those that almost made it: The Beatles: ‘Across the Universe’ because no list is complete without them.Beach Boys: ‘Wouldn’t it be nice’ for what it does to 50 First DatesBob Dylan: The answer, my friend, is ‘Blowin in the wind’.Billie Myers: Strictly for ‘Kiss the Rain’ as used in Chasing Amy inter-cut with Ben Affleck pouring his heart out to the lesbian. Damien Rice: ‘Blowers Daughter’ when you just can’t let go.

Tom Petty: ‘Free-fallin’ for those moments when you have.
