Ponnumani Punnare will hit music channels on Christmas Day

The tune of Ponnumani Punnare is catchy; almost ‘dappankoothu-like' and the lyrics are down-to-earth. And the visuals unfold a story.

It narrates the tale of a youth (played by Ranjith Sarovar, a television anchor) who is infatuated with the village belle (played by Rima Kallingal). Manian Pillai Raju is a Chinese wrestler who is the villain in the story. While well-meaning friends like Suraj Venjaramoodu (in a funky hair-do) for instance, give the youth advice on how best to win the young woman's heart; things go awry when he follows the instructions.

And just as the audience wonders if the youth will win the belle's heart, the scene changes. It ends with pack-up at a movie set and shows the actors, technicians, crew et al.

Christmas release

Says Mahadevan Thampi, director of Ponnumani Ponnare, the music video which will hit music channels on Christmas Day: “The song is a light-hearted one and so we wanted the visuals that accompanied it to be the same.”

But although the video album is new, the song is at least seven years old. Composed and tuned by Nolin Johnson, Ponnumani Punnare was conceptualised during his school days. “Both Mahadevan and I were classmates at M.V. Higher Secondary School, Chempazhanthy. We were both into participating in youth festivals. Ponnumani… is a song that was created for one such festival and it was a hit. Everyone was humming our song.”

However, lack of knowhow kept the release of the song on hold, until now. “One day, while talking to Ranjith and his friend Sonu, we mentioned our dream of turning the song into a video album. Impressed by the tune, they in turn introduced us to the producer of the video album, Prakash I. Thykkoottathil,” says Mahadevan who is a still photographer in Mollywood.

Shanker Mahadevan has rendered the song. “In fact, Shankerji thought the song was part of some movie. When he heard it was not, he was quite upset. He was pacified though when he heard that it was part of a video album that would have a big launch,” says Mahadevan, who directed Enniku Paadan, a song from Saji Surendran's Ivar Vivahitharayal.

Mahadevan adds: “It is the same team – Nolin, Xian (editor), Arun Ram Raj (story board), Sujith Raghav (art director) and Pradeep Rangan (make-up artiste) as in Ivar Vivahitharayal – that is working on this video. The only new comers are Nithin Thalikulam (camera) and Anish (choreography).”

The music video is part of an album titled (but of course) Ponnumani Ponnare. “There are altogether seven original tracks in the album. One, which is in Tamil, will hopefully be sung by Vineeth. A duet by Chitra chechi [K.S. Chitra]and M.G. Sreekumar sir titled ‘Nin Mizhigulalil' is also a highlight of the album,” says Nolin. The album will reach music stores in January.
