Whenever the word ‘Woodstock’ is uttered, people are taken back to the heady days of 1969. 2013 might be a little different, but the spirit of Woodstock lives on. Escape Festival of Art and Music, organised annually in Naukuchiatal, Uttarakhand, appears to be at least partly steeped in this spirit. L. Tochhawng, fondly called Mama is one of the main organisers of the festival. “Woodstock is partially my inspiration because of the number of people gathering there whist listening to the best music. However, ,” he says. To celebrate the spirit of this upcoming festival in May, the organisers put together a prelude show at Season’s Hotel, Tarudhan Valley, Manesar, recently. It showcased bands like Grey Area and White Wizard. While the former played post modern retro desi funk with jazz, the latter performed an electronic act.

An international band called Chalo Africa enthralled the audiences with their rendition of Congolese music styles, western classical music, as well as salsa reggae and R & B. The members of this band are all African students from various Delhi colleges. The two electronic acts from Goa like Giuseppe and JJJ performed psychedelic trance.

The aim of the organisers is to fuse quality music with an ambience where it can be enjoyed at leisure by everyone old or young.

The great music combined with fine food made the showan experience worth undertaking. However, there was a need to throw a light upon the Indian as well as old school English music as well, considering a lot of audience like that as well.

we have turned it around in such a way that it is more suitable for the Indian audiences, making it a family oriented festival
