Atraditional German dish, maultaschen is a pasta dough that encloses traditional fillings such as minced or smoked meat, spinach, bread crumbs and onions with herbs and spices. Generally square or rectangular-shaped, maultaschen is generally eaten on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Since Christians are encouraged to abstain from meat during Lent, maultaschen had meat concealed in the pasta dough as if to say what cannot be seen can be eaten.
