Mariah Carey has seen enormous success and also spectacular failure (did anyone say Glitter ?). Post marriage and the birth of her twins, Mariah has been super busy. This year, she is judge on American Idol , season 12, she is coming out with her 14th studio album and also acting in The Butler directed by Lee Daniels. In an email interview the pop diva talks about judging the reality show among other things.

How did you come to be a judge on American Idol?

I was approached by all the shows. But Nick said I should do American Idol , because it’s the top, it’s the cream of the crop. And I said to myself ‘Just do the show. It has produced stars who have had major careers.’

What qualities do you look for in the contestants?

I feel like I get really attached to certain people for different reasons, whether it's a story or, the talent. You know, sometimes I see myself in some of the contestants. Like when I first started.

Do you think reality shows like American Idol are helpful to performers looking for a break?

It’s American Idol , this is the biggest show. It changed trends in music, it’s created massive superstars and people that are going to have timeless careers.

Could you tell us your most memorable moment on the show?

There was this one time a girl sang one of my songs and I thought she was really good. I thought, ‘This girl has a chance.’ I was proud that I had written a song that she was inspired to sing.

Could you tell us something about your new album, set to release this year?

I wanted to put another single out before, like maybe a ballad. I’m still writing, I’m still working, so you never know what it is going to end up being. But I feel the new album will benefit from the re-energizing experience of American Idol .

Could you tell us about your movie, The Butler, also set to release this year?

It is an honour working with such a legendary, stellar ensemble (Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda). I just want to thank Lee Daniels.

With so much happening, how do you find time to balance out work and family?

It is super difficult. It is really exhausting, but this isn't the most exhausting part. The best part is when everything runs smoothly and you come to work, do your job and go home like more of a normal person than someone who's in a studio for 18 hours, which would be me. Motherhood’s an amazing thing, I never thought I'd experience because I always said I don't think I'd do it because my career was always my life.
