An enterprising family brings you Maria Rosa, a range of clothing you can tweak to your desire

What binds this family strongly together is the thread of Maria Rosa. The Maria Rosa designer wear collection is the combined effort of Beena Joykutty and her daughters Ria and Sonia. From a childhood craze that saw Beena hold the needle and scissors in a fervent zeal to master the art, to the mother creating a variety of clothing for her little daughters, grew the desire to create something. "We were definitely inspired by our mother's skill and involvement and were unconsciously streamlined into clothing. We had even designed dresses for dramas and puppet shows when we studied in Mount Carmel," echo Ria and Sonia. The daughters have since pitched in with their own contemporary take on mom's business — customised clothing with the help of computer designing. Maria Rosa has grown in strength as a brand because of its one-of-a-kind design policy across all kinds of trousseau, including saris, and the offer that allows customers to choose their own pattern and bring in changes. "This is where we differ from boutiques dealing with a variety of designer labels, or top-notch tailors stitching clothes to fit. Ours is a customised designer boutique with plenty of patterns. One can afford to be choosy and can pamper your own tastes," says Sonia, trained in bridal and eveningwear at the London College of Fashion. The collection consists of formal business suits in Italian wools and blends, formal-wear and tops for women in silk, linen and blends, day dresses in crepe, linen and satin and stylish co-ordinates in lightweight cottons. The designers offer cocktail dresses in crepe, satin and silk too. Sonia has created some amazing combos. For instance, the Gota-work evening gown has golden creepers running down the sides, giving the gown an Indo-European touch.Eveningwear can also be mixed and matched. Pick from a range of trousers, skirts, blouses and tops in silk, evening gowns, jackets and long coats in brocade, crepe, georgette and raw silk. If bridal wear makes a statement, it's the nose for fashion that ensures that there is co-ordinated wedding wear for the bride's mother as well! Saris and blouses in both raw silk and heavy crepe look avant-garde. The sequence and bead work in the georgette sari with similar work on the blouse is sure to pack a punch at any party and comes at a cool Rs. 13,500. Not to forget the gorgeous halter neck blouse in raw silk with sequins and Swarovski crystals, or the blue zardosi antique silver raw silk blouse with embroidery and sequences for Rs. 5,500.Ria's role extends to the glossier side of the business too. The Swarovski crystals and metal components from the Austrian company are selected and designed by her. "The Swarovski representatives in Bangalore train us on the job," she says. Maria Rosa is at 682, I Stage, Indiranagar (080-25289819) and Leela Galleria, Airport Road (41255836).RANJANI GOVIND
