ORIGIN: Formed in 1995, Magic Society is the only functioning body of amateur magicians in Kochi. It was formed with a view to bring all those practising magicians in Kochi and also those who are interested in magic together. The organisation is unique in the sense that all the members are practising magicians at various levels. Currently, the Magic Society has 35 members and 20 observers. Anyone with a genuine interest in magic can approach the Society for a membership. Each aspirant will be retained as an observer before granting regular membership. On being absorbed as a member, one has to remit a one time admission fee of Rs. 3,000 along with a recurring annual fee of Rs. 600.

ACTIVITIES: One of the prerogatives of Magic Society is to intervene and interpret contemporary issues of social concern through magic. “In our formative days, we used to meet every week, but with the organisation having fallen into its groove, we meet every second Sunday of a month,” says Vaidar Sha, secretary of the Society. The Society has always involved in social issues. In 1999, the Society brought out an awareness campaign against AIDS titled ‘Magic on Wheels’. Prompted by its roaring response, the show was repeated several times later. The Society also organises auction/sale of magic goods at their office.

They have launched programmes on topics like ‘Plastic Menace’, ‘Environment Protection’ etc. Magic is an essential aspect in programmes. The Society came out with their opinion when the Mullaperiyar Dam issue was blown out of proportion. A performance by the members of the Society showcased certain suggestions to resolve the issue.

Yet another area where the Society has given thrust is in preaching moral values to children with the accompaniment of magic. These days, according to them, magic has many takers. Apart from shows, magicians are called to perform at anniversaries, birthday parties, and even corporate meetings. The duration of each show varies between 30 minutes to two hours. However, only skilled magicians are making a kill.

IMPACT: Through several of their activities, the Magic Society has been able to successfully permeate some socially relevant issues among the public. The classes on moral values have been well received and have brought encouraging results. The feedback from similar other campaigns have also been overwhelming as all of them come with a strong social message that needs to pass on.
