JACK IN THE BOXThe sheer surprise of the Bento meal...

For most of us lunch is supposed to be a quick meal, which must be filling and satisfying. The pitfalls of corporate life ensure that leisurely gourmet lunches may be a thing of the past. Just Like That, a restaurant in Whitefield is making an attempt to change that mindset with its “Bento Out of the Box” offerings.

Chef Manu Chandra, who manages the restaurant says, “Bento boxes are a very popular lunch concept in Japan and East Asia. We serve vegetarian, chicken and seafood options. It is quicker than ordering an al-la-carte meal and more filling as well.”

The bento lunch box comprises a choice of a curry, rice or noodles and dessert accompanied by miso soup, a cold salad and a portion of dimsums.

In the vegetarian section, the tangy rendang curry is a potent combination with portions of the basil fried rice. In salads, you could munch on the cold vegetable salad with tofu and the vegetarian pan-seared Gyoza.

The delightful mushroom, spinach and tofu dimsums on offer are a world away from the soggy green vegetable fillings that most vegetarian dimsums offer. The miso soup, with a sprinkling of vegetables provides a nice start to the meal and is best enjoyed with the breadsticks.

As far as the chicken version goes, we sampled some portions of the Thai red chicken curry and a portion of the moderately-flavoured garlic noodles. It tasted heavenly, with a hint of sweetness. The chicken dimsums and the cold chicken salad also deserve mention.

It is the seafood platter that we attacked with gusto. The crab salad and the crunchy prawn wafers and dimsums provided a brilliant start. If you are a fan of mussels, you can sample the Thai green curry served with portions of fish and mussels.

It goes well with portions of basil rice. Another certain hit is the tangy red snapper curry. The fish is soft, full of flavour and tastes delicious. The crab salad served with an assortment of vegetables is a must try. Manu says, “This is a very healthy meal offering since the cuisine does not require the use of too much oil and butter.”

We finish the meal with portions of white chocolate and sesame pudding, the five spice chocolate cake and the delightful apple cheesecake crumble tart. The Bento Out of the Box (lunch only) costs Rs. 499 plus taxes for the vegetarian and chicken variants, while the sea food meal costs Rs. 599 plus taxes. Like That Only is located at #14/31A- Hagadur Road, behind Forum Value Mall. Call 65475610.
