BOOK LAUNCH One more blogger is out with her book. Preeti Shenoy launches her 34 Bubblegums and Candies
Simple things in life that one experiences everyday. It happens to all of us. Don’t read them all on the same day,” says R.K. Mishra of Preeti Shenoy’s “34 Bubblegums and Candies”, launched at the Crossword Bookstore recently. On a green background, a couple blowing the same bubble, but thinking of different candies forms the cover. “I spent days and nights working on the cover — six months to be specific. After 26 different covers, we settled on this one,” says the blogger who also paints. Her stories are normal stories that happen to everyone.
Preeti began with the story of “little black dots” taught to her when she was in school where life should not be about focussing on the little black dots or dark moments. “One should learn to ignore the little black dots in relationships and friendships and instead, live life fully,” says the Pune-based writer. She says that the untimely death of her father upset her greatly. “He was scheduled to come to Pune. It was hard to come to terms with his death and looking at new t-shirts that he hadn’t worn as yet was worse.” Starting with a “Bubblegum” story, Preeti narrated the poignant incident of visiting a home for HIV positive children in “Please hug me I’m Just Like You”. A simple, touching story that looks far from IT related dreams of expensive homes, cars and healthcare, this was an incident that touched a chord. “All are true incidents — from the heart.” Preeti, who has lived in Bangalore for eight years, says that this incident made problems of the privileged look trivial. “It is so precious to be healthy.”
Preeti said that there were very few children whose mothers were commercial sex workers, and who knew their full names. She also read from two other stories “Sylvester Stallone doesn’t open up easily” and “Radiators and Drains”, keeping the audience engaged and sending them into splits. “34 Bubblegums and Candies” is meant to be a non-preachy book that unfurls 34 real-life incidents in a fun way. The author also spoke about adapting her blog into a book. Preeti is now working on her second book.AYESHA MATTHAN
