Ring of Fire

Johnny Cash is known for his songs about crime and the outlaw image he cultivated, but for me, this simple, honest song about falling in love sums up his music best. Cash’s biggest contribution to country music was that he made songs that were honest and relevant, and that’s what’s so great about Ring of Fire. It’s unpretentious. The introductory trumpet sequence almost makes fun of itself, but it’s so catchy and uplifting that it’s hard not to smile every time you hear it. Cash’s silky baritone is at its best in the chorus.
