Modern lifestyle is well-manifested in the music we hear, the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the way we celebrate our festivals. . I nostalgically recall my childhood celebrations of the Pongal festival that spanned over three days. It was an occasion for the family to get together at my grandparents’ house in the village. All the houses wore a new look with white washed walls and painted doors. The horns of the cattle at home were painted and balloons were tied on to them. Mattu Pongal meant watching the jallikattu with cousins in the evening. Whereas Pongal for my children mean offering prayers, relishing the chakkarai pongal made in the microwave and watching the special TV programmes.
