Director Hansal Mehta, who was named the best director for Shahid in the 61st National Film Awards, says it is an acknowledgment of the hard work and honesty that he has put in to make the biopic.

Raj Kumar Rao, who plays the title role in the film, has been named in the best actor category along with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu, who won it for Perariyathavar .

As per the jury, Raj Kumar’s portrayal of the intriguing journey of a Muslim young man who is persecuted, and who rebels and ultimately comes back to fight the injustice as a committed law abiding lawyer, brings to life the soul of Shahid Azmi.
