ATHIRAI VENUGOPAL

A rich source of iron, this dish is easy to make

I learnt to make this nutritive dish from my great-grandmother. The flowers of the drumstick tree are high in iron content. This dish is highly recommended for those who are anaemic and for nursing mothers.

Cooking instructions

Heat a heavy bottomed pan with ghee and add clean murungai poo.

Fry for sometime and keep aside.

Boil the moong dal with turmeric powder.

To the boiled dal, add the fried murungai poo, chopped onions and chillies, sambar powder, salt and one cup of water and allow to boil for some more time.

Roast the ingredients and add to the dish.

Serve hot.

What you need

Drumstick flower (Murungai poo) - 1 cup

Small onions, finely chopped - 10

Green chillies, finely chopped - 2

Moong dal – 1 /4 cup

Turmeric powder - 1 tsp

Sambar powder - 2 tsp

Salt - to taste

For roasting

Sunflower oil - 2 tsp

Ghee - 2 tsp

Mustard – 1/2 tsp

Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp

Red chillies - 2

Curry leaves - a few
