What's the latest in hairstyles and cosmetics?

Most of us keep track of the latest trends in fashion and jewellery but seldom experiment with new hairstyles or make-up. A new hairdo and the right make-up can give you a refreshing makeover and can dramatically up your glam quotient. Let's check out the latest trends in hair and make-up and take a few style cues from the experts.

Straightened hair has been the trend for a while but right now, curls are ‘in'. “Short or shoulder length hair is in and the ‘graduated bob' is becoming popular down South too. This cut has longer hair in the front and it gets shorter around the nape,” says Swetha Kunjan of Live In More Style, a hair studio in Kochi. Bollywood stars such as Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu have been seen sporting this look. If long hair is what you prefer, then layering will add to your glam quotient. Fringes are back in style too.

Shades of brown, honey and red are the colours this season for streaking your hair but for global hair colouring, apart from the regular shades such as brown and burgundy, violet is the chic new shade.

Right make-up gives you an instant makeover. It not only enhances your looks but also helps diminish the effect of blemishes and other marks. Getting the right shade of foundation to complement your skin tone is important. Try out different brands before you make your choice.

Shobha Kunjan of Live In More Style, recommends a ‘3-in-1 makeup' pan stick which has a moisturiser, foundation and powder. A blusher adds colour to your cheeks. If you are going out in the sun, use a sun block.

For the eyes, the heavy smoky look is the style for evening and party wear, while the soft, subtle look is for the day. For the lips, the nude glossy look is the new style statement. Using a moisturiser before applying the lipstick protects your lips and lets your lipstick stay longer.

The trend now is to have the lipstick and lip liner of the same shade. Go for neutral shades of pink and beige for the day and darker shades such as red and maroon for evening wear. A final touch of lip gloss completes the sensuous look.

Mineral make-up is a recent addition in the cosmetic world. This make-up consists of finely ground loose minerals such as zinc, mica, gold and aluminium that rejuvenate the skin. The zinc in the makeup has strong sunscreen properties.
