The oil from the Ylang Ylang flower is used in perfumes

The Canaga or Ylang Ylang Flower is a genus of evergreen trees belonging to the family Annonaceae, occurring in tropical and subtropical forests in India, Australia and Pacific Islands.

The name Canaga Odorota stands for the strong fragrance of the flower. This evergreen medium sized tree has large alternate, simple membranous leaves, a downy beneath and wavy margins.

The tree is valued for its six petal scented yellow flowers produced in pendant clusters from the leaf axials. Flowers are long stalked and 8 cms long. The fruits are globose or ovoid and black, having 10-12 segments and 6 to 12 seeds.

There are attractive street and specimen trees. The trees are commercially grown for their scented flowers that are used in perfumes as a perfume oil.

The well known perfume Ylang Ylang is obtained from the first distillation of the flowers.

Ylang Ylang is an important ingredient of all high class perfumeries, extensively used in the fixation of flower perfumes and in the manufacture of face powders, hair oils etc. The scent is supposed to be soothing; helps reduce blood pressure and stress.

The wood of this tree is used for posts, household articles and packing cases.
