New role`Captain' Vijaykanth has a lot riding on his new film, "Sabari," releasing this Friday. Produced by Salem Chandrasekhar and directed by action movie specialist Suresh, the film has two heroines, Jyothirmayi and Malavika.The music is scored by Mani Sharma. Says Suresh: "Vijaykanth plays a doctor in `Sabari', a role he has not donned so far in any of his films. And he has solutions not only for his patients but for society as well."Career highMahesh Babu's "Athithi" is progressing well. After "Pokkiri" became a blockbuster, the handsome hunk of Telugu cinema has emerged Numero Uno. "Athithi," directed by Surender Reddy, is a romantic thriller with New Delhi as a backdrop. Bollywood beauty Amritha Rao who shot to fame with "Vivah" makes her Telugu debut. The music is by Mani Sharma. Mahesh once again tries an image change in the film. Mahesh's brother Ramesh Babu produces the film under their home banner Sri Krishna Productions Private Limited.Cricket carnivalTo cash in on the World Cup that's on in the Caribbean, producer UTV and director Milind Luthria have come out with a film "Hattrick," using the tournament as a backdrop.The film is based on the fictionalised fortunes of the Indian cricket team. It also takes a look at what happens to four sets of people whose lives have been affected by the tournament. They are Nana Patekar and Danny Denzongpa, Kunal Kapoor and Rimi Sen, Paresh Rawal and finally the Indian cricket team. Says director Luthria: "`Hattrick' is also about underdogs battling life's challenges to emerge winners, and eventually recognising the winner that exists in each one of us." The film has foot-tapping music by the hot and happening Pritam.Unique film`Abhirami' Ramanathan has come up with a multistarrer with a message _ "Kavalar Ungal Sevagar," a 25-minute film on the Chennai Police. The film takes a look at how police personnel in various ranks respond to distress calls and complaints from people in the city. It stars TV artistes and "the real heroes, the men in the force." The highlight is the special appearance of a galaxy of top stars _ Kamal Hassan, Vikram, Suriya, Jayam Ravi and Asin _ who endorse the good work of the Chennai Police. Says Ramanathan, at the launch of the DVD of the film: "The public needs to know about the good work done by the Chennai Police at a time when it celebrates 150 years of its existence.
