EVENT Talk on Vishnu Temple at Tirukurungudi
Historian Pradeep Chakravarthy will be in the city to give a talk on ‘The Temple We Forgot’ highlighting the multiple facets of Vishnu temple at Tirukurungudi, a village 47 km from Tirunelveli
“The talk will not be religious but on social, economic and political role of the temple which,” he says, “is spread over 18 acres in the foothills of a mountain range with a stream close by.” It is a less known temple and has something for everyone.
Epigraphists and archaeologists have over 20 inscriptions to be translated while art lovers have sculptures of camels, elephants and horses to Arab merchants carved on wood and stone, that are not seen elsewhere. For theatre lovers, the temple hosts ancient dance drama session that was revived in the last decade.
“The dance drama highlights a Dalit devotee being instrumental in getting salvation for a demon, says Pradeep, who will address heritage enthusiasts at Hotel Fortune Pandiyan on Sunday (February 3) at 5 p.m. The talk has been jointly organised by the Pandya Nadu Centre for Historical Research and INTACH, Madurai Chapter.
