Vidya Balan wears them and so does Deepika Padukone. Nearly everyone these days seems to be sporting jhumkas ( jimmikis in Tamil) — kundan, bali, cocktail, terracotta, quilled…

Says Thiruvananthapuram-based costume designer Sameera Saneesh: “Jhumkas have always been a favourite with people down South. The trend, however, has started picking up among young girls with actresses, especially in Bollywood wearing them. Films such as Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela have also added to its growing popularity. So much that this traditional accessory has become the flavour of this fashion season.

Sameera feels one of the reasons jhumkas are ruling the style roost is that they suit all pockets. From Rs. 20 to several lakhs, one can find jhumkas at both roadside shops and designer boutiques.

However, Bindu Mathai who runs ‘Aakaar’, a Bangalore-based design studio for handcrafted terracotta jewellery, says jhumkas were not much in vogue when she introduced a range in terracotta in 1995.

“The best thing about jhumkas is that they go well with different kinds of outfits and styles. Also, they come in different shapes and colours,” says Bindu.

Cashing in on the trend, jewellery stores are coming up with jhumkas in contemporary designs and shapes. But those with an antique touch are equally popular.

So, game to sport a retro look with timeless jhumkas?
