Chat Ranveer Singh says with Ram Leela he has arrived as a good-looking actor
He was happy-go-lucky in Band Baaja Baaraat , turned into a Casanova for Ladies V/s Ricky Behl and played a subtle, yet intense character in Lootera . However, Ranveer Singh was still in a niche zone as each of these three films catered to a rather restricted segment of the audience.
With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-hyped Ram Leela though, Ranveer feels that finally he will be reaching out to a much wider audience. May be that is the reason why he has gone the extra mile for the film, and built a formidable physique. Ranveer has also turned totally unabashed for Ram Leela and removed his shirt to flaunt his physique.
Ranveer’s reason is simple: “The director was clear that every girl should love Ram and guys should love Leela.” The star adds with a wink: “And for Leela (Deepika Padukone) this wasn’t a problem at all. I was the one who had to put in thodi zyaada mehnat (hard work).”
But Ranveer is happy with the overwhelming response to his shirtless look in the song ‘Tattad Tattad’. He smiles: “Thankfully, it seems to be working. Some girls have tweeted how I looked ordinary in my first film, was tolerable when I took off my shirt in Ladies v/s Ricky Behl but now after ‘Tattad Tattad’ I have become totally hot. I guess, finally, I am desirable.”
Ranveer is also looking at the film to enhance his reputation as an actor. A Bhansali film has come rather early in his career since the director has always worked with big names, except for Ranbir, whom he introduced in Saawariya .
Says the actor, “Bhansali has worked with an elite bunch of actors. And each of them has delivered his or her best performance in Bhansali’s films — Salman Khan ( Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ), Shah Rukh Khan ( Devdas ), Mr. Bachchan and Rani ( Black ), Hrithik Roshan ( Guzaarish ) and Manisha Koirala ( Khamoshi ). Am I missing anyone? When I signed up for Ram Leela , I was nervous because I was becoming a part of a Bhansali film at an early stage of my career. I have a responsibility; it is a big deal to be a leading man in a Bhansali film. I had to live up to the expectations.”
Unlike many of his earlier film, Bhansali has come up with a complete masala entertainer with Ram Leela. And going by the poor track record of such films at the box office in the recent times, what does Ranveer think about this film’s fate?
“It isn’t a brainless script. It has a wonderful love story. There is a lot of drama, and the relationship between the characters is well layered. There is certain credibility attached to the storytelling and the director has managed to weave in elements of a masala film in an effective manner. You experience romance, music, action, drama — just about everything in Ram Leela .”
