Hockey was a popular sport in the country till India was the undisputed Olympic champions. Indians had mastered the skill of playing on natural surfaces. The introduction of artificial turf required different set of skills and posed a fresh challenge. Thus began the decline of the sport. The politicisation of hockey federations and associations further damaged its fate. The Indian cricket team’s 2011 world cup win and the shorter formats have further increased cricket’s popularity. In this context, I do not see the revival of Indian hockey in the near future.
