Pedal for your heart

Just 10 minutes of cycling daily strengthens muscles and improves blood circulation, and 20 minutes bolsters the immune system as well, according to Germany's Consumer Initiative.

People who ride a bicycle to work benefit their health twice a day, the group said, adding that fairly long distances should be no deterrent because cyclists in traffic-congested cities were often quicker than motorists to arrive at their destination.

A half-hour bike ride strengthens the heart, and 40 minutes or more improves endurance, the group said. A faster metabolism and fat-burning kicks in after 50 minutes of pedalling. The cyclist's heart quickly adapts to the exercise, and he or she becomes winded and breaks out into a sweat less easily.
