INDIGENOUS EXERCISE After a day’s work at home, SUKANYA CHELLAPPA feels that doing it regularly is actually a good way to keep layers of fat and weight at bay.
When my maid took leave unannounced last week, I simply sat and stared at the long list of chores needed to be done – cooking, sweeping, mopping the house, buying groceries, watering the plants, walking the dog…
It’s been ages, since I have done household chores all by myself. So dependent I am on the maid that I felt hit by a bouncer. Brooding doesn’t help either and so I thought of swinging into action without delay.
It started with walking my dog, Caesar to the nearby park. There, I chanced to meet Mr. Rajendra, Honorary Director of Madanraj Gym and we struck a friendly conversation. Without quite realising, I poured out my anguish over my maid’s leave to him.
Interestingly, he comforted me: “Why don’t you take to the household chores as a way to fitness.
It is becoming a lost tradition due to the hustle and bustle of every day life. But any household work can become aerobic if one strives to reach one’s target heart rate zone. To make a chore more aerobic, push yourself by working faster.”
I smiled and hurried towards home. On the way back, picked up the groceries.
After reaching home, I tuned into FM channel and washed the utensils. Then I cleaned and cut the vegetables to whip up a simple but a nutritious meal for myself.
Next I wielded the broom and the mop and whizzed from one room to the other, making them all dirt free and clean. This was followed by washing the clothes and watering the plants. And believe you me, at the end of it all I was left with a sense of well-being.
And I must share, I did all the work at one go and didn’t quite feel tired. Rather, with a little planning I managed time and work wonderfully and, in fact, felt a trifle guilty about creating a fuss over the maid’s absence. Doing the household work regularly is a sure step to fitness.
And I have realised that I need not fret over my increasing weight any longer.
The options for staying fit are easy and many with the confines of my home.
Now I am left wondering how many offs should I allow my maid!
