BOOK On the lifestyle and customs of Coorg

Y ou'll find here the recipe for Coorg's famous Pandi Curry, the colourful details of a Kodava wedding, a peek into the hilly district's history, and a slice of the community's sporting and warrior traditions and rituals. “Coorg: Land of Beauty and Valour” by P.T. Bopanna, with the tagline “What to see, buy, eat and experience”, takes you through the land of Coorg and the lifestyle of its people through the eyes of some of its well-known community members.

Journalist-author Bopanna meant it to be a coffee table book that was also affordable. The beauty of the land and its people yields picturesque photographs. There is a detailed list of tourist spots to visit (some with contact information).

Each section also has a brief introduction to its author, giving you an idea of their involvement in that particular field. For example, the section on Kodava weddings and naming ceremonies has been put together by Boverianda Chinnappa and Nanjamma Chinnappa, a couple that has translated the original Kodava text containing the community's traditions — “Pattole Palame” — into English.

C. P. Belliappa has written about the history of Coorg. Anthropologist Kambiranda Kaveri Ponnapa has written about the food and festivals of the place. Textile designer Chindamada Arati Monappa has focussed on the lifestyle. The foreword for the book has been penned by writer Pattadamada Sundar Muthanna.

Bopanna has earlier authored “Discover Coorg”, a travel handbook, “Rise And Fall Of The Coorg State” and “Dateline Coorg”. He also runs two websites — www.coorgtourisminfo.com, and www.coorgrecipes.com

The book has been published by Prism Books, Bangalore, and is priced at Rs. 280. For details, contact 93424 30141.
