Event A Coffee Festival in town

It is like carrying kaapi to Kumbakonam. Café Coffee Day's grand intent to teach consumers how to make the perfect brew seems a bit out of place in a land of coffee making and drinking. Still, the prospect of meeting Sam Rozario who is referred to as a ‘coffee evangelist' is intriguing. He might give us coffee- based recipes, or better still, tell us how to make one of those exotic cold coffees.

Instead, we get a demo on how coffee is made with a percolator and with a plunger. Rozario explains the varieties of coffee there are at Café Coffee Day. The single origin coffee smells divine. It is a hundred per cent Arabica that comes from Baba Budangiri Hills. Wikipedia informs you that a Sufi saint brought back the coffee beans from Arabia while he was on a pilgrimage to Mecca and first planted them here! Café Coffee Day also has other varieties that are a blend of coffee and chicory in various proportions. Rozario explains how the chicory adds to the thickness of the coffee. The pure coffee decoction does not do that, he points out.

With leisurely mornings a thing of the past, the stove top espresso or the percolator as we know it, is a boon. Rozario demonstrates how quickly coffee is readied with one of the sexy black coffee percolators. It makes enough coffee for three cups and it looks good too. The French styled glass appliance with a plunger is the other coffee making gadget. He lauds the freshness of the coffee made in these gadgets. Alas, he says coffee filters are not fast enough. They take too long and are invariably cold by the time the coffee filters down.

While the thousands of households that wake up to filter coffee in this part of the country may disagree with that, they will definitely approve of the aroma pervading Café Coffee Day. The “Coffee Festival” is on at six of its cafes in Coimbatore and people can walk in and learn about coffee making till November 18.
