Children enjoyed themselves on Republic Day by donning garbs of national leaders

Shopper's Stop on Harrington Road celebrated Republic Day with a fancy dress competition and lots of activities for children. The third floor of the store was a riot of colour as children dressed as national leaders performed for an enthusiastic audience. The celebrated poet, Subramania Bharati, complete with the twirling moustache and the trademark turban, was a favourite closely followed by Veerapandiya Kattabomman, amid the Nehrus and Gandhis.

Impressive

A tiny tot, probably only five, dressed up as Shivaji, an elaborate headgear and beautifully done costume in place, impressed. Various schools participated and the competition was tough. The fancy dress had two categories - children in the age group 4-8 and those in the 9-12 age group. Sushmitha, as Indira Gandhi, won the junior level while Inniyan (12), as Bharati, from SBOA CBSE and Junior College, won in the senior category. Girls from the DAV School won the group song contest with their impressive rendition of "Om Enum Oliye." The event was meant to create awareness about the Freedom struggle and celebrate the spirit of patriotism. As for the youngsters, they had loads of fun. PAROMITA PAIN
