For the first time, a producer from Tamil Nadu has made a short film in French that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

P.L. Thenappan, who has made films such as “Kadala Kadala” (starring Kamal Haasan) and “Kana Kandein”, has now come up with a 15-minute film “Ecluse” that was well-received by the audience at Cannes. The screenplay and direction are by Mahendran Baskar, who has also scored the music. Filmed on an HD camera, the cast includes Mahendran Baskar, Elmoden Nassima and Abinaya Kaneshtampaia. When asked why a short film in French, Thenappan says: “I met Mahendran Baskar at the Cannes film festival last year. He narrated the story to me, and I was so impressed that I expressed my willingness to make the film. A few months ago, he contacted me, and I gave the go-ahead.

The film is shot entirely in France, and has a strong social message that is relevant across the world. It shows how most parents today have no time for their children, who have become TV and computer addicts and are going astray.
