An Italian antipasti (appetiser) dish served as a starter or snack, Bruschetta is at its most basic grilled bread rubbed with garlic and drizzled with extra virgin oil, salt and pepper. Common Bruschetta toppings include chopped onion, tomato, beans, herbs, ham and cheese. It is ostensibly derived from the Italian (Tuscan dialect) word bruscare, meaning to toast or burn, according to the dictionary.
