Where to head for school-time essentials

It is a time for frenzied shopping for parents of school-going children as a new academic year begins. While some city schools have already reopened after the summer holidays, others will begin in June. And a new academic session entails purchase of school bags, water bottles, lunch boxes, pencil boxes et al.

Realising that children call the shots in selecting these items and parents only play the role of a financier, the shelves of the city stores are stocked with items that appeal to children. The most important is definitely the bag. As indicated from the market, backpacks are in.

According to Lakshmi O.B, salesperson at Style Plus, ‘Feather’ has backpacks ranging from Rs. 485 to Rs. 995, which are preferred by high school children as it comes with a one-year guarantee. ‘Liviya,’ another brand, has backpacks priced between Rs. 615 and Rs. 890.

However if cartoon and comic heroes are your children’s choice, you may choose from an assortment of bags/backpacks with motifs/illustrations of Barbie, Mickey Mouse, Ben 10 and Power Rangers. Trolley bags with wheels cost around Rs.1,195.

Colourful bags

If a play of colours interests your ward, head to New Selection in Saphallyam Complex at Palayam. Here one can find backpacks from ‘ScooBee Day,’ ‘Paragon’ and ‘Marvel.’ Some of the popular combination of colours are red and blue and maroon and black. These makers also have backpacks in different sizes to suit different categories of school students.

Says Nazeer M., salesperson: “The price depends on the weight of the bag and the quality of the inner lining.” Made of nylon, some of the features of these backpacks are multiple pockets for convenient storage and open pockets for holding water bottles. Locally made bags/backpacks with illustrations of Spiderman and Hannah Montana are also available here, with prices ranging from Rs. 98 to Rs.600.

Soft and velvety bags/backpacks are available at Archies Gallery. Says Sharanya S., salesperson: “Kids like bags with cartoon/animal characters.”

Children can take sips of their favourite drink from environment-friendly water bottles by LKSH, which are available at Premier Office Equipment Company, opposite Ayurveda College. According to the proprietor Govind Swamy: “The insulated cover of these bottles help to keep the drink cool for three to four hours besides keeping away odours and flavours.”

Made of recyclable aluminum, these leak-proof bottles are available in capacities of 375 to 750 ml and cost between Rs.288 and Rs.450.

Style Plus has water bottles with illustrations of Mickey Mouse, Barbie and Winnie the Pooh, both in acrylic and high-grade plastic. A cheaper water bottle option to savour a chilled drink is available here for Rs.72.

To carry your pencils, erasers and more are cloth/rexine pencil pouches in different colours and designs ranging from Rs. 9 to Rs.31. Metal boxes with illustrations of Spiderman and Beni Bear are also available. Archies Gallery has metal pencil boxes with a tiny comb and mirror.

Designer notebooks, pens and pencils, lunch boxes with single, double and three tiers are some of the other items that have flooded the market this academic season.
