Chatline The truly Keralite thorthu has gone global and Indu Menon stars in this success story, discovers Priyadershini S.
Stylishly re-invented, the traditional Kerala ‘ thorthu ’ has featured as gift options in Martha Stewart Wedding magazine, as Editor’s Pick of the month in ‘Better Homes and Gardens’, in ‘Design*Sponge’, a website that features the best in design worldwide, in ‘The Lucky Mag’, Vogue’s gift guide. This says much about the humble handloom that comes from unsung, rural looms in Kerala. The credit to elevate this time-tested fabric to the international bazaar belongs to the enterprising spirit of petite and gritty Indu Menon.
She established ‘Kara Ventures’ in 2007 along with B. Sreedevi, Chitra Gopalakrishnan and Suryakala Sathish. Actor Revathi, a founding partner and Indu’s friend “endorses traditional fabric” in all her films. ‘Kara Ventures’ works out from their unit at Kanjiramattom, close to Kochi.
