NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Tulsi Kumar lends her voice to a number in "Aksar"

Daughter of the late music baron Gulshan Kumar, Tulsi is the new name to enter playback singing. To be precise, she has recently finished recording two songs - one for the film Aksar and the other for Humko Deewana Kar Gaye.Tulsi Kumar is not new to singing though. Before entering the film industry, she has done her share of singing devotional songs as well as remixes. "I wanted to begin with devotional songs because my family, as well as I, are very religious and I think it is important to have God's blessings in the beginning of one's career," she reasons. The remix trend, criticised by many, finds a supporter in Tulsi however. "They help re-introduce old songs to the youth and present them in a format that is liked by the young people of today. They also give a lot of opportunity to new talent, so what is wrong with remixes?" she asks. Speaking of hunts for singers on TV, Tulsi expresses appreciation for such shows, which she says, show people a way to enter the industry. "And no, they are not a threat to established singers," she adds.

Background helps

While she acknowledges that her family background has helped in augmenting her career, she also asserts that she has climbed the ladder step by step. "My family background has provided me with an exposure to music and got me interested in music at a very early age. But I have put in a lot of hard work and effort as well," she says. Though Aksar will be the first to release, Tulsi recorded her first song with music director Anu Malik and singer Sonu Nigam for her brother's production Humko Deewana Kar Gaye. "Recording with Anu Malik was a learning experience because he is very blunt. He frankly told me the areas I needed to improve on, which has helped me a lot. As for singing with Sonu Nigam it's been like a dream come true," she shares. Having made the shift from devotional to playback singing, Tulsi is gunning for a long career in the film industry and would like to sing to the tunes of Ismail Darbar and M. M. Kreem. And meanwhile, she is concentrating on cutting an album of her own and will continue to sing devotional songs as well. She is also not averse to live stage performances either. "I think they are a great platform and give encouragement to the artiste."
