Shilpa Shetty strikes a late deal. She’s launched her own production house and is all set to host Bigg Boss Season 2. Harshikaa Udasi reports
Then, there are late bloomers. Shilpa Shetty, for instance. For almost 10 years, she was always the Bollywood sex siren but never an A-listed actress. That is till Big Brother U.K. happened to her. Over those three weeks, she became the toast of the global community. An international show — Miss Bollywood and the S2 perfume was launched to cash in on that amazing euphoria. We kept waiting that some international film project would follow but no such luck.
So now she’s back. Launching her own production house and as the host of the Indian version of Big Brother — Bigg Boss Season 2 on Colours. Ask her why the huge time gap and if she feels that she has lost the Indian connect and she says, “Yes, there has been a delay in coming back to Indian audiences but had I not done my international projects I would have moved out of their memory. Soon, I will be on your television sets, and everyone will remember me again.” That’s as candid as one can get.
But, like we said, being late has become a habit with this lady. At the press meet for the announcement of the show, everyone from the top brass of the TV channel as well as the promoters of the show and the media were left twiddling their thumbs for over an hour. The Lady in Red arrived with some mumbo-jumbo about a car accident and how Mumbai traffic sucks. Sure.
Being back with the show, but only as a host, has Shilpa all excited. “If there is one fond memory of Big Brother, it has to be Davina’s (Big Brother presenter Davina McCall) voice. When you are cooped up with people in a house, you eventually have a problem with each of them, so I used to really look forward to those weekly meets with her. It was so soothing,” says Shilpa, adding, “My style will be warm and gentle. I will recount my experiences to the house mates but I will make it less contrived.”
Since she has been there done that, what does she think of speculation that reality shows are tailored? “No, definitely not. I know for a fact that the one I participated in wasn’t,” she says. Twenty-four hour surveillance with a special voyeuristic midnight slot which will be aired live and a daily show will be the highlights of Bigg Boss Season 2. Shilpa confesses that the worst nightmare for her was being shot when she was sleeping, “I have had strangers come up to me and say, ‘Shilpa, I know you. I have even seen you sleep’ and I am left shivering after that.”
Currently she has her hands full with the television show, the London leg of The Unforgettable Tour, shooting for The Man with Sunny Deol and finalising the cast for her film under her own production — S2. Sister Shamita will be fully involved with her in the creative process, and while there are rumours that Bipasha and Akshay will be her co-stars (Shilpa will star in the movie, of course!), she doesn’t confirm anything, revealing only that she has signed director Manish Jha.
