It is raining, it is pouring, and obviously we cannot look like the old man snoring. NEETI SARKAR gives some tips to look haute in the wet season

While the city is being lashed by monsoon showers, one wonders how to stay stylish while splashing in muddy pools of icky rain water.

Coordinating your outfit, accessories and footwear can be quite a task but here are a few tips on how to look your best through the wet season.

The most appropriate outfit for a casual day would be a pair of capris, either teamed with a tank top or knit wear that comes in different attractive hues.

For those who dare and want to take extra care against the slush, a pair of cargo shorts is a good option, say fashion gurus.

Billowing skirts and ankle-length jeans are best avoided this season for obvious reasons. Designer Ameetha Mathew, advises those who want a formal look to “consider wearing a knee-length skirt teamed with a formal shirt.”

Knee-length halter neck dresses and short skirts are suitable evening wear. This year, the colour palette is a combination of bold and light. Peacock blue, orange, purple, pink and other pastel shades are in. Avoid wearing white, black and grey.

“The preferred fabric this season includes synthetics and polysynthetics as they take very little time to dry, when drenched. Cotton is an absolute no-no,” says Beena, a boutique owner.

The trench coat is hot and happening, especially the double breasted ones. Buy a trench coat of a bold colour such as blue, pink, orange or brick red. Although raincoats as such are not very popular anymore, you could go in for a transparent one.

As far as footwear is concerned, “Leather boots are totally out but you can get out those gum boots or galoshes your mother would force you to wear when you were young,” says Karuna Rampal, a student of fashion designing.

According to her, “flowery boots are selling this season. One must go in for something extraordinary.”

Apart from being loyalists of the good old boots, stylists suggest you experiment with flip-flops, rubber mules and slippers this season.

And for all of you, who thought the umbrella is completely outdated, think again! Fashion designers around the city tell us that the umbrella is the must-have accessory. So go and get yourself a transparent one.

Big bags continue to reign. Avoid leather bags. Opt for a shocking pink or scion blue see-through waterproof bag. Be cautious about make-up. Always ensure you use waterproof make-up. You could give the mascara and the eyeliner a well deserved break, especially during the day. The lip gloss is an eternal favourite so don’t forget to carry it with you.

“Braided hair and hair pulled back in a high ponytail are the preferred hairstyles. You could also use bright coloured hair-bands,” says Kim, a beautician. Bring out those beads again. They jazz up your outfit, ditto for flashy belts.

The whole point is to look chic and comfortable at the same time. After all, what matters most is how one carries herself, come rain or shine!
