Whether it is the lasagne-loving, Monday-hating, Odie-baiting Garfield, the ever faithful Lassie or the fearsome and misunderstood monsters, King Kong and Godzilla; animal icons are able to inspire as much fear, laughter and tears as any top Hollywood star.

Animal Planet celebrates the historic rise in popularity of these characters in its new series “Animal Icons”. Over seven decades after he first climbed to the top of the box office, King Kong is still a world-wide phenomenon. Viper, Jaguar, Mustang evoking images of sleek, untamed and powerful creatures inspired car manufacturers.

The incredible creation of Garfield has all the makings of legends. Each episode focuses on a different animal figure or phenomenon.

The show will also feature exclusive interviews with celebrities, historians and animal experts and film clips to help to answer the question: why and how these characters became pop culture icons around the globe?

Animal Icons will also reveal how these characters were first created, their evolution over time.

Catch the show on Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
