With his hyped debut all set to hit the screens, Harman Baweja gets candid about life, and cinema with PRIYADARSHINI PAITANDY
Better known as Priyanka Chopra’s boyfriend till now (an allegation he denies — “We are not seeing each other”), Harman Baweja is all set to get an identity of his own with his debut movie Love Story 2050. “I am more tensed about it than a student waiting for his board results,” says the actor.
The film is going to be dubbed in Telugu too. So, is he dubbing? “If I dubbed in Telugu, it would sound like Greek to people here,” he jokes.
Talking about Priyanka, he says, “Priyanka is a fantastic actress. She’s a perfect co-star. She has absolutely no airs about herself though I’m a newcomer.”
Besides Love Story 2050, which releases on July 4, the new comer has a few other projects — Victory, It’s My Life, a remake of Bommarillu and What’s Your Raashi? Giving a preview of Victory, he says: “It’s about cricket and I play a batsman. The film stars ‘real’ cricketers, and to face them, my body language had to be right. So, I underwent intense training under Praveen Amre for four months.” As for What’s Your Raashi?, Harman says he can’t divulge details, and stops with saying that it’s being directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar.
With director Harry Baweja as his dad, why didn’t Harman foray into acting earlier? “I’m barely 27 years old and I’m debuting when the time is right. I needed to get experience in the art of filmmaking because my father strongly believes that I need to know everything — what happens behind the camera, during pre-production, on the editing table, and finally acting. So, I took my time.”
Harman was offered a few films prior to his debut, but he turned down the offers as he felt that home productions are the best way to get started. Smiling, he adds, “When your father is directing a movie, the environment is far more relaxed and far more controlled. Being my first film, there is a lot of love and care that went into it. And that has helped me do a better job.”
Not only does he bear an uncanny resemblance to Hrithik Roshan, but some of Harman’s dance movements in the promos also look similar to Hrithik’s. Whether it was intentional to make it Hrithik-esque is not known, but Harman insists he loves dancing and took up kathak classes with Sanjay Yadav. But, he adds modestly, “I think that if one were to technically judge my dancing skills, I’d probably fail.”
Another similarity between Hrithik and Harman is that when the former made his debut with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Kareena was supposed to act opposite him, but she walked out of the film. The same is the case with Love Story … — Kareena decided against doing it. Kaho na… went on to become a hit. So, while Baweja senior and junior hope that their movie too follows the fortunes of KNPH, let’s wait and see if the movie springs up another Hrithik!
