Raghu Ram on “Sitaron Ko Choona Hai”

Everyone was surprised when he took a break from the ongoing season of “MTV Roadies”. Now, we know why Raghu Ram did that. The man, known for his rude comments, is currently judging soft skills in a music-based reality show “Sitaron Ko Choona Hai” on Real.Says Raghu: “‘Sitaron Ko Choona Hai’ is different from other talent hunts. There is no audition. The focus is on becoming a talented and committed stage performer.” The show, which went on air recently, is set in an academy that has Raghu Ram as head and Neha Bhasin (of Viva fame) and voice coach Prashant Samadhar as faculty members. “It follows the grooming of 12 capable singers whose talent is being honed week after week. At the end of each week’s performance, rating cards — star card, yellow card or red card — are handed out. Two red cards lead to elimination,” he says.

Rewarding talent

Raghu says the most important thing in the show is that the audience does not vote for the contestants. “I don’t like other talent hunts because, despite the panel of judges, it is the audience votes that decide the best performer. If the panel of experts is powerless, what’s the use? In such shows, real talent becomes a casualty,” he states.

So, what would be his role in the academy as his singing prowess has not yet been seen? “As the head of the academy, I would push the best talent forward and groom him / her. More than that, I will bring my layman’s point of view to the table.” He says that as the head of the academy, it is his responsibility to make sure that people are pushed enough to give the kind of performance required.

Recently, he shocked lots by stating that he was looking at retirement. “I want to retire but the fact is I am a middle-class boy, and if I don’t work, I won’t be able to survive. Eventually, I plan to go to the Himalayas, rent a room there, and get down to writing a book.” Knowing him, he might make a reality show out of that as well!
