Sohail Khan gets to play many shades in “Heroes”

So, what brings a bunch of big names like Salman Khan, Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Mithun Chakraborty and Sohail Khan to work in Samir Karnik’s Heroes? “Meaty roles and an excellent script that reads like Rang De Basanti,” is how Sohail Khan puts it.

Karnik’s two earlier films Kyon...! Ho Gaya Na and Nanhe Jaisalmer were box office disasters but that hasn’t discouraged these actors. Says Khan, “The depth of the role is more important than its length. In Heroes, the roles of all the actors are well penned. I play as many shades as one can in a feature film. Despite having a huge star cast, I get a chance to be naughty, comic, romantic, emotional, heroic and serious. What else could have I asked for?”

The assignment

Khan plays a failed student of mass communication who has no direction or inspiration to work. He gets an assignment to make a film that can inspire the youth to join the Army. But he decides to make a film on why they shouldn’t join the armed forces. “He goes to meet the families of those who suffered because their men folk were soldiers. In the process, he meets families of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil war and it changes his entire point of view about patriotism,” he adds.

What Khan isn’t tired of praising the film about is its “conversational style minus any punch lines”.

“Samir hasn’t relied on those over-the-top dialogues to describe the lives of war heroes. So, when you watch the film you wouldn’t feel that you are watching Salman Khan or Mithun Chakraborty but the simple men who loved their country,” he adds.

Khan has a lot of “analytical points” to make about the changing ways of Bollywood.

On the one hand he is impressed with the way the corporate houses have “organised the film industry” and on the other, he feels that a few actors are defaming themselves by being a part of the reality shows that are “mostly stage managed.”

“Today a middle class man saves a part of his salary to watch a film with his family in a multiplex. He should feel the expense was worth it. The entry of corporate houses has done this. They have worked on the production value of the film without compromising on the entertainment part, ” he says.

Apart from awaiting “a role in an emotional, action thriller like Ghatak and Ghayal,” Khan is “high on expectations” about Kisan, his next “out of the box film with Jackie Shroff” which is based on the true story of a family of farmers in Punjab.”
