In the world of Australian television, Rebecca Gibney is one of the most-loved onscreen TV moms. For her role as patient-but-firm Julie Rafter in Packed To The Rafters, she has won a Gold Logie, a prestigious award in Australian television.

Gibney was born in New Zealand, and moved to Australia at 19. Growing up in a family of six siblings, she’s probably well-suited to play a mother in the noisy, often chaotic world of love and family that Packed To The Rafters is set in. The 48-year-old actress responds to questions over e-mail on her role in Packed To The Rafters , which recently began airing in India.

Do you identify with Julie Rafter?

Julie Rafter was a gift of a role and it's almost like we have morphed together. I'm probably not as fiery as Julie and she often puts her foot in her mouth, so I hope I'm not as tactless! I am a bit of a mother hen though. So, in that sense we are incredibly alike.

What are the core values of the show?

I think Packed To The Rafters has very universal values. I think all audiences will be able to relate to it. At the end of the day it's a show about a family and all the drama, love and laughs that go along with that.

What was your most memorable moment on the show?

It was when the show debuted on Australian TV in 2008 and we were the number one show for the night and increased in ratings the following week. We all realised that we had captured something special.

Where will the Rafters go from here?

Hopefully, continuing to explore the complexities of family life and all the ups and downs that come along with it.

Packed To The Rafters airs on Star World from Monday to Friday at 9 p.m.
