Twin cities' music director gets nominated for Jack Daniels `Backstage Tennessee' First Annual Rock Awards 2006-07

Ask him what is the similarity between his medical training and his current vocation as a music director and you get a, "no comparison. They are two different worlds." With The Angrez, Anukokunda Oka Roju, Stalemate and more film as well as television productions featuring his music, Dr. Maruth is a familiar name with the celluloid and rock fraternity in town alike. A chance meeting with Marcello Gomes of C.O.M.A after their gig at Gandhi Medical College where he was studying, saw the emergence of their band Necropolis that went on to feature on MTV's Get It Tour in 1996 along with White Rage. Also, the band's Tears of The Unborn was featured on an international compilation Sounds From the Underground then.Touted as futuristic for his times then, Dr. Maruth collaborates with Sledge now and is nominated for the Jack Daniel's `Backstage Tennessee' First Annual Rock Awards 2006-2007 under the Best Keyboard Player of the Year category."I met Sledge when they were recording Desert of Souls. The album had some really good tracks, heavy and with lots of energy, stuff that I enjoyed but wasn't doing in my films or television work. Anjani had heard and liked some of the tracks that I had recorded and mixed and I eventually ended up mixing and mastering their album. Since we teamed up we have recorded two singles Envenomed and Damnation (with ex-Haunted by Angels' Jane Evil) both of them ended up on the Audiostreet charts at No.1 and also got nominated for the awards," he says.A guitarist who moved on to the keyboards for Sledge, "the current sound of the band is something we have been working on, trying to bring in a little more melody yet retaining the intensity and energy so very distinctive of the band. And that's where I came in, on the keyboards, even though this is something I haven't done with my previous bands, as I was on rhythm/lead guitars before. Keyboard is the mother of all string instruments they say," says the Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Dream Theatre, Slayer and Metallica buff who is currently involved with film projects and Hindi rock/pop album productions, including the music score for the first flick from his Magic Mushrooms Company that promises to present vivid visuals to match the name. More on the awards, "This was something that was really long awaited by the rock fraternity in India, finally giving them legitimacy in the music circuit, something missed by innumerable talented rockers in the years before. It would really give a boost to the rock music scene in India. It feels very good to be nominated for the awards," he says. While the build up gigs promise a line up of over 36 bands, the finale on March 18 will feature the five top bands of the country. Want Hyderabad to be there?
