The `Unlimited kebabs or biriyani' fare at GNL Meridian is worth a try

Have you ever pushed the limits, experienced the extreme? No, please remove the images of skydiving, bungee jumping and driving on an uneven terrain. The sport I am referring to does not involve dangling from precipitous edges or staring into deep vacuum. In fact, it is down right pleasurable - a meal deal that's unlimited. "Unlimited kebabs or biriyani / (Burp) / just Rs. 199* (*taxes extra) a person." Is this a call for Chennai's sportive foodies? Anyway, I presented myself for lunch at Candles and Roses, the basement restaurant of GLN Meridian on Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Salai (South Boag Road), T. Nagar.Candles and Roses lives up to its name; it has a romantic feel a la Kollywood dream sequences - silver and dark grey colour scheme, white bead curtains and side cubicles in shimmering gauze. As for the `deal' - kebab and biriyani platters - the kebab platter is a better bargain. You get kebabs, a stuffed paratha with subzi and biriyani too. All this at Rs. 199 for non-vegetarians and Rs. 149 for vegetarians.Too good to be true? It all depends on which `q' you prefer, quality or quantity? If you are the fussy type, read no more. But if you are looking for some reasonably tasty meaty morsels, what the restaurant has to offer is worth it. One more thing, forget the names listed on the menu, because you won't get them all. Once the platter comes, go for the fish. The fried mackerel and Amritsari macchli kebab are yummy. The vegetarian platter is a disappointment. The filling for the bharwan simla mirch when grilled becomes sabzi kadak sheek kebab, add tutti fruiti and it becomes the bharwan of aloo. The common factors, hariyali paratha and the biriyanis, veg and non-veg, were tasty. What is guaranteed to put a smile on your face is the brownie and ice cream that is not a part of the deal. The gooey walnut studded brownie is worth the extra you are paying for. So don't hesitate. The fest is on till February 5. Call 52070555 for reservations.MARIEN MATHEW
