Ran

Akira Kurosawa

It is often believed that there is no great director than Akira Kurosawa and no greater writer than William Shakespeare. A combination of the two is more celebrated. Ran which means turmoil, chaos or revolt in Japanese; is Kurosawa's interpretation of King Lear . The story is based on legends of the daimyo Mori Motonari and stars Tatsuya Nakadai as Hidetora Ichimonji, an aging Sengoku-era warlord who decides to abdicate as ruler in favour of his three sons. Ran was Kurosawa's last epic. and was hailed for its powerful images and use of colour. Costume designer Emi Wada won an Oscar for costume design for her work on Ran.
