Fargo

The Coen Brothers

The Coen Brothers are among the best screenwriters of the modern era, and Fargo (1996), which fetched them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, is the epitome of their genius. Set in Minnesota, their home state, in the harsh winter of 1987, this “homespun murder story” is essentially a simple tale of a crime gone horribly wrong. With precise setting of period and place stunningly captured by Roger Deakins, with perfectly sculpted characters brought alive on screen by a stellar cast, and with a flawless narrative, Fargo is one of the most perfectly-made movies I have seen.
