The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Peter Jackson

The third and final instalment of Peter Jackson's magnum opus “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy makes for a memorable cinematic experience. In transforming J.R.R. Tolkien's time-transcending epic into a movie trilogy, Jackson has managed to build a masterpiece. While the first two movies, “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Two Towers” are brilliant, The Return of the King is the pinnacle of Jackson's cinematic achievement. This 2003 movie stands up to the extremely high standards of Tolkien's books, with an ensemble cast that has produced some fine performances (most noticeably, Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf) and an imaginative use of CGI effects to create the grandeur of Middle Earth on the screen complete with Gollum, the elephants of Mordor and a graphic and unforgettable depiction of the battle of Pelennor fields.
